Laura Leveque (pronounced lavek) is a freelance outdoor writer, western artist, and illustrator Since 1996
she’s written the “Donkey Prospector” column for Gold Prospectors magazine (as Jackass Jill) and
“Adventures of a Donkey Prospector” for The Brayer magazine. Her current projects are: The Painter and the
Donkey short story series, Adventures in Solar Cooking! A Solar Oven Cookbook, and illustrating assignments
for Bluwaters Press.
"My idyllic childhood was spent on Fox Island, Washington, once a small farming community. When not
picking fruit and berries, stringing oysters, fishing, crabbing, and attending to livestock, I rode the island
trails, dirt roads, and beaches horseback.
"After graduating from Central Washington University with a Master of Arts degree in 1976, I supplemented
my freelance artist income as a land sales agent licensed in both Washington state and New Mexico. In 1990
I started selling non-fiction magazine articles.
"Later I worked as an underground mine tour guide and pack donkey outfitter in Colorado and New Mexico.
In 1995 I worked at Granite Gap, a historical silver mine, with miles of underground drifts and tunnels to
explore, and real adventures with my pack donkeys, Shaggy and Willy. In 2006 I wrote a fictional screenplay
mystery based on my short story, Dead Men Drift, set at Granite Gap Mine."
